Whether a child’s parent is receiving addiction treatment for alcohol addiction or not, it’s important to offer a safe space for the child. It’s impossible to determine if a child will grow up to be an alcoholic. But exposure to AUD during childhood is a good reason to reach out to health experts and get the support needed to reduce the risk. How a Parent’s Alcohol Use Disorder Can Affect You as an Adult
As adults they may continue to make self-destructive choices and struggle with intimacy of any kind. Deep down they have a lot of shame and blame themselves for things within the family system. 4The lack of a relationship between these variables does not mean that COA’s do not have higher levels of ADHD than control subjects, only that such an association can be “explained” by the parental conduct disorder. Currently, however, inconsistent findings and a relatively small database make it difficult to draw any strong conclusions in this area. 5 information packs for professionals working with children of alcoholics. - The present cG×Eneg×Epos study demonstrates for the first time the differential susceptibility of the MAOA-uVNTR genotype to negative and positive environments constituting risk or protection against alcohol misuse among Swedish adolescents.
- On the one hand, the children framed themselves as vulnerable victims forced to navigate their parent’s alcoholism, which often encompassed severe neglect, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.

Characteristics (Traits) of Children of Alcoholics
Most studies have demonstrated significantly higher levels of psychopathology—most commonly behavior disorders—in COA’s compared with non-COA’s. Although researchers have identified a potential relationship between childhood behavior disorders and adult alcoholism, they do not yet know which behavior disorders or combinations of disorders actually lead to alcoholism. Accordingly, one cannot predict which COA’s are at the highest risk or how childhood psychopathology interacts with the environment to moderate this risk. Consequently, prospective studies are needed that track and periodically interview COA’s and non-COA’s (both with and without psychopathology) and their families until the children are past the age at which they are most likely to develop alcoholism. Most of the information on the developmental pathways leading to alcoholism comes from retrospective or cross-sectional studies.
